Director Bong Joon-ho introduced ‘Mickey 17’ as a human-scented sci-fi film.
On the morning of the 20th, a footage screening and press conference for the film ‘Mickey 17’ was held at CGV Yongsan I-Park Mall in Seoul. Director Bong Joon-ho and actor Robert Pattinson attended.
Director Bong Joon-ho stated, “‘Mickey 17’ is a humanistic sci-fi film. It tells the story of Mickey, an ordinary and unfortunate young man. I am looking forward to presenting a sci-fi film that is full of human essence.”
He also mentioned, “The protagonist is unfortunate. Why is he unfortunate? His job involves dying repeatedly. He is sent to places where he is likely to die and keeps dying. ‘Mickey 17’ means he has died 17 times. It’s an extreme job. When he dies, he is printed anew. This is different from the replicants seen in existing sci-fi. It is inhuman in itself. The original concept is that a human is printed. Isn’t it heartbreaking that he is printed every time? Since Mickey belongs to the working class, class issues will naturally arise.”
He added, “The film does not grandly address class struggle. It focuses on how unfortunate this character is and how he navigates through difficult situations; it is also a coming-of-age story for Mickey.”
‘Mickey 17’ depicts an unpredictable story where ‘Mickey’, a disposable (expendable) sent to dangerous tasks, faces the crisis of his 17th death, and as he is presumed dead, ‘Mickey 18’ is printed. It will be released for the first time in South Korea on February 28.
