A new Captain America portrayed by actor Anthony Mackie is coming. It is expected to present a new world unique to the MCU, utilizing not only visual spectacles but also legendary classics and unparalleled technical skills.
In a video interview held on the morning of the 5th for the film 'Captain America: Brave New World' (directed by Julius Onah, hereafter 'Captain America 4'), Anthony Mackie expressed, “I never expected to take on the role of 'Captain America,' and it has been an amazing experience. I am very excited and honored.”
He stated, “As a young actor, I feel a sense of responsibility and gratitude for reaching such a high position. It is an honor to lead a project at such an important time, and I am just happy to be part of the path the MCU is taking.” He introduced his character, saying, “The unique aspect of Sam Wilson's Captain America is that he hasn't taken the serum, so he fights and grows by confronting everything physically. He is a reliable person, a character with a righteous steel mentality, united by humanity and camaraderie.”
He added, “I believe he embodies the most ideal message and vision of true 'righteousness' that the hero series speaks of and aspires to.”
He also shared the reaction of the previous generation's Captain America, Chris Evans. Anthony Mackie said, “When I received the new script and realized I was the new Captain America, Chris Evans was next to me. He hugged me tightly and said, 'You will do just fine.' It was a strong encouragement.”
Additionally, he mentioned that he did not feel any pressure as he is a character of a completely different color, inheriting the shield as the next generation.
Director Julius Onah emphasized, “The most important point of the new Captain America is the process of overcoming difficult journeys with strong humanity rather than superhuman strength,” adding, “I wanted to emphasize the theme that 'everyone has a good power.'”
He continued, “I wanted to provide not only visual spectacles but also emotional fun and inspiration. I aimed to encompass everything from inspirations drawn from classics to a new world that has not been experienced, using various works as references to show the potential of the MCU not only to Korean audiences but to audiences worldwide.” He stressed, “We made many attempts to ensure that the new Captain America can show a completely new and different charm while continuing the existing universe.”
He also mentioned, “The action is the same,” stating, “Since 'Captain America' has to defeat enemies without the serum, there are many impromptu motions using surrounding objects. This brings a differentiation in action compared to the past, and in this process, techniques used in Korean films were also paid homage to. This is a part where my strong affection for Korean cinema is reflected.”
He added, “We created a fun and entertaining movie that Marvel does best. I hope you remember that point and enjoy it fully.”
'Captain America 4' is an action blockbuster where Sam, after reuniting with Thaddeus Ross, who has become president, delves into the hidden existence and reasons behind a sinister plot to take over the world.
