Yoo Seung-ho shared his thoughts on his second theater challenge in ‘Killing Caesar’.
On the afternoon of the 30th, a public rehearsal event for the play ‘Killing Caesar’ was held at the Next Lab of the Chungmu Art Center in Jung-gu, Seoul. After a demonstration of key scenes, a discussion was held with director Kim Jung, writer Oh Se-hyuk, and cast members Kim Jun-won, Son Ho-jun, Yang Ji-woon, and Yoo Seung-ho.
The play ‘Killing Caesar’ is based on Shakespeare's ‘Julius Caesar’ and reinterprets it as a modern play focusing on Caesar's assassination. It depicts the irony that the justification of ‘assassinating Caesar to protect the republic’ ultimately gives rise to another dictator.
Yoo Seung-ho, who debuted in the 2000 MBC drama ‘The Thorny Fish,’ returned to the theater stage for the first time in 24 years with ‘Angels in America’ last year, and now challenges the stage again with ‘Killing Caesar’ just a year later.
Playing the role of Brutus, Yoo Seung-ho stated, “It’s true that I didn’t hear good stories when I did ‘Angels in America,’ and I admit that I was lacking. I had a significant fear of the stage at that time, and performing in front of an audience was a huge challenge.” He added, “Although it was full of difficulties, looking back, I miss the moments I acted on the theater stage. There was a moment when theater actors told me, ‘You will want to return to the theater stage someday.’ That’s why I decided to participate in ‘Killing Caesar’.”
In the role of Caesar, who is assassinated before ascending to the position of absolute leader and emperor of Rome, Kim Jun-won and Son Ho-jun have been cast. Yang Ji-won plays Cassius, who is conflicted between political ambition and the justification of protecting the republic, while Yoo Seung-ho portrays the idealist Brutus, who struggles with the dilemma of betraying a friend for the ideals of the republic.
‘Killing Caesar’ will be performed at the Mary Hall Grand Theater of Sogang University from May 10 to July 20.
