Actor Yoo Ah-in (real name Eom Hong-sik, 39) will receive the sentencing in his appeal.
At 2:20 PM on the 18th, the Seoul High Court's Criminal Division 5 (Presiding Judge Kwon Soon-hyung, An Seung-hoon, Sim Seung-woo) will hold a sentencing hearing for Yoo Ah-in and his accomplice, Choi Mo, who are charged with violations of the Narcotics Control Act.
Yoo Ah-in is accused of administering four types of medical narcotics—propofol, midazolam, ketamine, and remimazolam—181 times from September 2020 to March last year, and illegally obtaining over 1,100 sleeping pills through 44 prescriptions under another person's name from May 2021 to August last year. Additionally, he is accused of smoking marijuana in the U.S. with four accomplices, including his acquaintance Choi Mo, and instructing YouTuber Kim Mo, who witnessed the act, to smoke.
In the previous sentencing hearing held in December last year, the prosecution requested the court to impose a four-year prison sentence on Yoo Ah-in, the same as the first trial's recommendation. They also requested a fine of 2 million won and a confiscation order of 1.54 million won.
Yoo Ah-in was also sentenced to four years in prison in the first trial, but during the sentencing hearing held in September last year, he received a sentence of one year in prison, a fine of 2 million won, 80 hours of drug rehabilitation program, and a confiscation order of 1.54 million won, and was taken into custody.
Yoo Ah-in's side appealed for leniency in the appeal trial, stating, "In trying to bring joy to the public, I neglected to take care of myself, which has greatly impacted my life as an actor, and I must now live with the public's harsh gaze," and added, "Please consider that the price the defendant pays for a wrong choice accompanied by depression is far greater than what an ordinary person would face." He also mentioned the loss of his father in August last year, saying, "I have to live with the guilt that my father passed away because of my wrongdoing," and stated, "There is no greater punishment than this."
