Jang Yeon-mi, the mother of the late MBC weathercaster Oh Yoanna, who died last year after complaining of workplace bullying, has concluded her hunger strike after reaching an agreement with the company after 27 days.
Civic groups Ending Credit and Workplace Bullying 119 announced on the 5th that Jang would end her hunger strike and be hospitalized at the Green Hospital in Jungnang-gu, Seoul, following a temporary agreement between MBC and the bereaved family.
MBC plans to hold a press conference on the 15th with the bereaved family, which will include an apology to the deceased, the awarding of a posthumous employee ID, and a promise for measures to prevent recurrence.
The memorial space set up at MBC headquarters in Sangam-dong, Mapo-gu, will be maintained until the second anniversary of Oh Yoanna's passing on September 15 of next year.
Additionally, MBC has decided to abolish the positions of existing weathercasters, with the premise that they will not suffer any disadvantages, and to transition them into regular positions as climate specialists.
Since the 8th of last month, Jang has been on a hunger strike in front of the company, demanding an official apology from MBC, measures to prevent recurrence, and the restoration of her daughter's honor.
Meanwhile, the late Oh Yoanna began her career as an MBC weathercaster in 2021, appearing on 'MBC News', 'MBC News Today', and the radio program 'Opening the World in the Morning'. However, she suddenly passed away on September 15 of last year, and evidence of workplace bullying was found on her mobile phone, leading to controversy.
