As Girls' Generation's "Into the New World" echoed at the impeachment rally for President Yoon Suk-yeol, the original artists, Yuri and Seohyun, also raised their voices.
On the 14th, a rally was held in Yeouido, including the National Assembly, urging the passage of the impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk-yeol. The organizers, 'Emergency Action for Social Reform to Immediately Resign Yoon Suk-yeol,' estimated that 2 million people participated, while the police's unofficial estimate was 208,000. At the scene, Girls' Generation's debut song "Into the New World" was played multiple times. Following the emergency martial law on December 3, there are evaluations that this song is emerging as a new folk song due to the increased participation of the youth generation in rallies.
In this context, the original artists, Yuri and Seohyun, also voiced their support. Yuri recently communicated with fans through a platform, saying, "Are you doing well in the cold? The light sticks (Girls' Generation cheering sticks) are so pretty and cool. Be careful of catching a cold and dress warmly," encouraging fans participating in the rally. She also added, "I saw 'Into the New World' being sung so well. I listen to it every day too."
The day before the rally, on the 13th, she said, "Everyone, eat kimbap tomorrow to fill your stomach, be safe, and take care of your health. Sing 'Into the New World' well." Yuri had pre-ordered 200 rolls of kimbap from a kimbap shop near the National Assembly for the fans. Moreover, it is rumored that she offered to cover any additional costs, allowing fans to use it without restrictions.
Seohyun, after the impeachment motion was passed, posted a photo of the cover of Han Kang's novel "The Boy is Coming" on social media, adding a line from the lyrics of "Into the New World," saying, "We will be together no matter how long it takes," subtly expressing solidarity. "The Boy is Coming" deals with the Gwangju Uprising of May 18 and sheds light on the lives of citizens trampled by state violence. With Han Kang winning the Nobel Prize in Literature, the work has been revisited since the emergency martial law on the 3rd.
Meanwhile, on the 14th, the National Assembly held a vote on the second impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk-yeol. All 300 members of the National Assembly attended the vote, which resulted in 204 votes in favor, 85 against, 3 abstentions, and 8 invalid votes, passing the motion. Following this, the presidential office received the impeachment decision, leading to the suspension of President Yoon's duties.
