The South Korean musician alliance has made a declaration urging the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol.
On the 13th, a total of 762 members of the (tentative) South Korean musician alliance declared, “Those who oppose impeachment are conspirators of rebellion. We demand ‘the impeachment and immediate arrest of Yoon Suk-yeol’.”
They stated, “Did you know Article 77 of the Constitution of the Republic of Korea?” and added, “We have learned about the conditions under which the president can declare a state of emergency in just a few days. With this despair, we declare the will of musicians regarding Yoon Suk-yeol and the People Power Party as follows.”
The South Korean musician alliance reflected, “December 3, the day Yoon Suk-yeol declared a state of emergency, was an ordinary day like any other. That night, Yoon Suk-yeol violated the constitution with an illegal order to send troops to the National Assembly and the Election Commission, undermining the democratic values of the separation of powers, and ordinary life was destroyed.”
They also mentioned President Yoon Suk-yeol's address to the nation on the 12th, stating, “He argued for the legitimacy of the emergency declaration with the absurd claim that ‘the president's declaration of a state of emergency is a highly political act.’ Moreover, the members of the ‘People Power Party’ are supporting this claim, positioning themselves as protectors of the president. There are no citizens, only power struggles for the interests of the ‘People Power Party’.”
They continued, “Angry citizens are gathering in front of the National Assembly to shout for impeachment in unison, waving cheering sticks, singing idol songs, and calling for the punishment of the coup forces. The music we create is resonating in the world while echoing in the squares. We musicians lament this ironic situation, saying, ‘The country of K-Pop, where our seniors and colleagues have poured their souls, is being reflected as a politically backward country abroad. The brand value of K-Culture, elevated by artists including us, is being brought down by South Korean politics.’”
They added, “Music is often referred to as the salt of life. When the country is stable and a cultural environment is established, we can create music that enriches life and adds balance and depth more freely. Only then can we protect the honor of K-Pop. Therefore, we declare our demand for a healthy creative environment for our survival, regardless of political inclination.”
Finally, they strongly asserted, “Today, we demand that impeachment must pass in the National Assembly. Furthermore, we will fight alongside the citizens until the Constitutional Court upholds the impeachment and the country is normalized. Step down! Impeach! Uphold!”
