Singer and actor Lee Seung-gi has expressed his devastation over his father-in-law's repeated illegal activities and has officially declared the severance of ties with his in-laws.
On the 29th, Lee Seung-gi stated through his agency Big Planet Made, "I am sorry to convey this message with a heavy heart," and added, "Although a fine was imposed in the retrial regarding the illegal activities that have been continuously raised against my father-in-law, he has recently been indicted again due to similar illegal activities," revealing his official stance.
"As someone who has been waiting for the results based on trust within the family, I cannot suppress my feelings of devastation regarding my father-in-law's misconduct," Lee Seung-gi said. "I deeply reflect on my hasty remarks made last year without thoroughly reviewing matters related to my father-in-law," he continued, "I believe that appropriate punishment must be imposed for illegal activities, and I sincerely apologize for the pain caused to the victims who suffered due to my rash judgment. I also feel nothing but regret towards everyone who has believed and understood me."

He continued, "This incident has severely damaged the trust within the family to a level that is difficult to restore, and after much contemplation, my wife and I have decided to sever ties with my in-laws," emphasizing, "From now on, I will live with a more correct value system and a sense of responsibility for a healthy society."
Previously, Lee Seung-gi faced controversy shortly after announcing his marriage to actress Lee Da-in, the second daughter of actress Gyeon Mi-ri, in April 2023. His father-in-law, Lee Hong-heon, was accused of making false disclosures regarding a capital increase by a company called Corebit in 2016, claiming that Hong Kong capital would invest, thereby manipulating the stock price and illegally profiting hundreds of millions of won. His mother-in-law, Gyeon Mi-ri, was a major shareholder in that company.
Before the wedding, Lee Seung-gi refuted allegations in an interview with a media outlet that his father-in-law used 26.6 billion won from the capital increase of Corebit, stating, "It is company money that cannot be used in a personal capacity, and it was not actually used for personal or family purposes. I clarified this during the trial." As suspicions of stock manipulation involving Lee and Gyeon Mi-ri grew, he claimed, "The assertion that 26 billion won was embezzled through stock manipulation, resulting in 300,000 victims, is a clear misinformation."
In fact, Lee was sentenced to four years in prison and a fine of 2.5 billion won in 2018, but was acquitted in the following year's appeal. However, last June, the Supreme Court overturned the acquittal and sent the case back to the Seoul High Court, stating that some of the disclosed information constituted "misconduct" that could cause harm to investors.
Afterward, when asked about his in-laws at a production report for the movie "Big Family," Lee Seung-gi cautiously stated, "What I have consistently said is that my in-laws' matters are their own, and my wife has completely gained independence from her family and established an independent household. I don't think it would be appropriate for me to add anything further on this matter. However, if my remarks have caused misunderstandings, I feel I need to be more careful."
Hello, this is Lee Seung-gi.
I am sorry to convey this message with a heavy heart.
Although a fine was imposed in the retrial regarding the illegal activities that have been continuously raised against my father-in-law, he has recently been indicted again due to similar illegal activities. As someone who has been waiting for the results based on trust within the family, I cannot suppress my feelings of devastation regarding my father-in-law's misconduct.
I deeply reflect on my hasty remarks made last year without thoroughly reviewing matters related to my father-in-law. I believe that appropriate punishment must be imposed for illegal activities, and I sincerely apologize for the pain caused to the victims who suffered due to my rash judgment. I also feel nothing but regret towards everyone who has believed and understood me.
This incident has severely damaged the trust within the family to a level that is difficult to restore, and after much contemplation, my wife and I have decided to sever ties with my in-laws. From now on, I will live with a more correct value system and a sense of responsibility for a healthy society.
I sincerely apologize once again for causing concern and disappointment due to personal matters.
