Singer and actor Hwang Min-hyun has set a new record for his 'life character' with his outstanding character portrayal.
In the final episode of the Tving original drama ‘Study Group’ (directed by Lee Jang-hoon and Yoo Beom-sang, written by Um Seon-ho and Oh Bo-hyun, planned by Studio Dragon, produced by Y-Lab Plex), which was released at noon on the 20th, a thrilling showdown unfolded between Yoon Ga-min (played by Hwang Min-hyun) and the final boss Pi Han-ul (played by Cha Woo-min). Hwang Min-hyun enhanced the viewing experience with his vibrant action performance until the very end.
In ‘Study Group’, Hwang Min-hyun perfectly embodied the unique character settings of ‘Malknun-gwang’ (a person with bright eyes), ‘Himsum-jjin’ (a nerd hiding strength), and ‘Munchkin’ (a term for an extremely strong protagonist), transforming into Yoon Ga-min himself. His wide acting spectrum, freely transitioning from hyper action to subtle emotional lines, garnered enthusiastic praise such as “Rediscovery of Hwang Min-hyun” and “His potential has truly burst forth.”
Hwang Min-hyun's high synchronization with the original webtoon character in ‘Study Group’ was undoubtedly remarkable. He completed the model student Yoon Ga-min with a neat school uniform, messy hair, and his trademark horn-rimmed glasses, while also portraying the ‘nerdy’ aspect with shy eyes and an innocent smile.
Hwang Min-hyun's ‘action style’ that does not hold back also drew attention every time. The ‘zero-gravity action’ where he was suspended on wires and the ‘hyper action’ of breaking walls with his fists added tension to the drama. In this work, filled with cartoonish action sequences like ‘fire kick’, ‘one-punch fist’, ‘unfair play’, and ‘Dangsandai-style dragon kick’, Hwang Min-hyun captivated the audience with his clean movements and outstanding physicality.
His acting transformation did not stop at action. Hwang Min-hyun expressed delicate emotions even amidst intense action, bringing depth to Yoon Ga-min. Before the showdown with Cha Woo-min, he conveyed a mix of anger and determination through his expressions and gaze, enhancing the immersion. He also delicately captured emotional changes, such as offering warm comfort to Joo Yeon-woo, who had lost his grandfather.
Having previously shown a soft image in youth dramas and historical dramas such as JTBC’s ‘Live On’, tvN’s ‘Alchemy of Souls’ and ‘Alchemy of Souls: Light and Shadow’, and ‘It’s Useless to Lie’, Hwang Min-hyun took a leap as an actor by challenging the school action genre with ‘Study Group’.
