Creator Shin Won-ho is generating curiosity by sharing behind-the-scenes insights about ‘Someday, a Wise Resident Life’.
The new tvN weekend drama ‘Someday, a Wise Resident Life’ (Creator Shin Won-ho, Lee Woo-jung / Directed by Lee Min-soo / Written by Kim Song-hee / Planned by CJ ENM Studios / Produced by Egg is Coming) (hereafter ‘Unsljeon’) is a spin-off of ‘Wise Doctor Life’ that depicts the growth process of residents dreaming of becoming wise doctors as they go through a phase of initial love for the series.
Director Shin Won-ho, who received great love through the ‘Reply’ series and the ‘Wise’ series, is drawing attention as a creator. He expressed, “Since it’s my first time creating a drama from a new position rather than as a director, it took me some time to get used to the role. It’s also my first time expanding the worldview, but the production team, including Director Lee Min-soo and Writer Kim Song-hee, did such a great job that I am very satisfied.”
In particular, as ‘Unsljeon’ is the first spin-off of ‘Wise Doctor Life’, the interest from fans of the ‘Wise’ series is high. He shared the motivation for the project, saying, “We were thinking about how to expand the worldview of the stories we have, and we were able to deal with another worldview of ‘Wise Doctor Life’.” He added, “We prepared the spin-off with the goal of creating a new story that shares the same color.”
For that reason, he explained the differentiation, saying, “We provided a sense of unity with Yulje Hospital, which is a symbol of ‘Wise Doctor Life’, and moved the location to the Jongno branch, giving a similar yet completely different feeling.” He also mentioned that the background of the story focuses on the growth of residents who have just stepped into society, dealing with both obstetrics and gynecology, which allows for simultaneous storytelling of the departments covered in the existing ‘Wise Doctor Life’ series.
Recently, Creator Shin Won-ho remarked, “It seems that we cannot see many growth narratives in reality.” He stated, “In the drama, just like first-year employees in other workplaces, first-year residents also face challenges and mistakes. The process of changing their mindset as they experience worries and small conflicts in their daily lives will be depicted.” He added, “When expressing the relationships and attitudes of residents towards their profession, the term ‘initial love phase’ fits perfectly. I think viewers will find it enjoyable to watch knowing that these characters will eventually come to love their work.”
Moreover, he expressed satisfaction with the actors who will portray this growth journey, drawing attention. “I was pleased with the casting of all the actors, including Go Yoon-jung (as Oh Yi-young), Shin Chae-kyung (as Pyo Nam-kyung), Kang Yoo-seok (as Eom Jae-il), Han Ye-ji (as Kim Sa-bi), and Jung Jun-won (as Koo Do-won). I hope this opportunity showcases how charming and talented these individuals are,” he praised, looking forward to meeting the actors.
Finally, Creator Shin Won-ho pointed out the key viewing point of ‘Unsljeon’, saying, “It’s a story about all beginnings in the world, including friends who are starting their first jobs and babies who have just been born. I hope viewers can share emotions by laughing and crying together as they watch the initial love phase of different characters experiencing immaturity and growth.” This has heightened anticipation for the first broadcast.
Meanwhile, on the 11th, the Ministry of Health and Welfare announced through data that “the total number of candidates for appointment in March this year is 1,672, which is 12.4% of the 13,531 candidates for appointment in March last year.” This indicates that despite the government offering various special measures, 11,859 individuals did not return to the training field.
In particular, according to data submitted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare to the Health and Welfare Committee of the National Assembly, the number of applicants for the first half of the training residency recruitment for those wishing to return was at a minimal level. It was revealed that only one person applied for obstetrics and gynecology, a typical avoided department.
As the collective resignation of residents in protest against the government's expansion of medical school quotas has prolonged, attention is focused on whether ‘Someday, a Wise Resident Life’, which had been indefinitely postponed, will resonate with viewers.
The new tvN weekend drama ‘Someday, a Wise Resident Life’ will premiere on Saturday, April 12, at 9:10 PM.
